Founded in 1540, following the establishment of the Lausanne Academy, the Bibliothèque Cantonale et Universitaire - Lausanne prides itself of encyclopedic collections, which date back to the beginnings of book printing. These are made available to the scientific community at Lausanne University as well as the general public of Canton Vaud. In line with its legal deposit role, the BCU Lausanne is responsible for collecting and archiving any book published in or of relevance to the Canton Vaud. The collection of 16th century editions encompasses some 4’000 titles, of which around 1’200 originate from the former library of the faculty of the Free Church of Vaud, including numerous works of importance to the history of protestantism and religious wars, in some instances unique copies. Some 100 titles are being digitized as part of the e-rara project.
