Biblioteca Salita dei Frati, Lugano
The Salita dei Frati Library in Lugano was opened to the public in 1980. It is the oldest library in Italian-speaking Switzerland, having been established at the start of the 16th century in the Capuchin monastery. Now administered by the “Associazione Biblioteca Salita dei Frati” (“Salita dei Frati Library Association”), it is dedicated to the preservation and cataloguing of its holdings, focusing its new acquisitions on the field of bibliography, the history of the book, popular religious sentiment, and the Franciscan Order. It is characterised in particular by the rich collection of 18th- and 19th-century works from the Ticino, books on local history, preaching, popular devotion, asceticism and Italian literature: hereof the works from the 16th – 18th centuries are of particular importance.
