No. 334 Patent
Hub-Mortising and Boring Machine.
With Graduated Stroke and Automatic Chisel-Reverser.
This machine will mortise huts up to 8" diameter. It is substantial inevery part, and unexcelled in speed of operation and rapidity of adjustment. Some of its peculiarities are the graduated stroke for relieving the foot of theoperator from jar, the automatic ehisel-reverser, the method of laying out thework, and the plan of setting the table for the angles of the mortises.
The bed is adjustable for different sizes of hubs, being raised and loweredby a heavy screw extending from the center of the bed to the base of machinein direct line with the chisel-mandrel, and acting as a receiver for the thrustsof the chisel in mortising. It has a cross adjustment to and from the chiselby means of a screw worked by a crank.
It is also arranged with a chuck, fastening the hubs at one end, the otherend turning in a cup. The jaws of the chuck are operated by a screw. A dialis attached to the head-stock spindle, having as many notches in its circumfer-ential edge as there are mortises to be cut in the hub, the dial moving onenotch to turn the hub every time a mortise has been cut.
The chisel is brought down to the work by the action of the treadle, thechisel connections being lengthened as the treadle is depressed, bringing thechisel into the mortise gradually, from a still point to the full length of thestroke. It is supplied with the patent automatic ehisel-reverser, which reversesthe chisel-bar instantly, or it can be changed to reverse by hand if desired.
The length of the mortise is accurately gfadiiated by means of stops on thetable. It will work both straight and zigzag mortises, requiring no laying out.The angles of the mortise are governed by a lever having a crank and connec-tion attached to the table.
The lever has a handle with a spring stop, which works into adjustablepoppets in a slot on the same circle as the lever. The supports of the leverwith the slotted piece are securely fixed to the center upon which the tableswings, and can be adjusted instantly to the angle of the mortise.
The boring attachment is mounted in a hollow cylindrical lumsing encasingthe arbor and gearing. It can be instantly started and stopped, and is driven fromthe shaft at the top of the machine. As the auger is placed on the line of thechisel, after the hub is bored, it has only to be moved under the chisel to bemortised.
It will mortise from 50 to 80 sets of hubs per day. Seven chisels and augersare sent with each machine, viz.: T \", tV'> %"> H"> and %"■
The tight and loose pulleys are 12"x3", and should make 400 revolutions.
