Note, Those Parts of the Ocean, whichborder upon the Land, are called by variousNames, according to those of the adjacentCountries; as the Britijh Sea , the Irijh Sea ,the French and Spanish Sea.

16. A Lake isa Collection of deep stand- a Lake.ing Water, inclosed all round with Land,

and not having any visible and open Com-munication with the Sea: But when thisLake is very large, it is commonly called aSea, as the Caspian Sea in Asia, &c.

17. A Gulf is a Part of the Sea almost a Gulf.encompassed with Land, or that which runs

up a great Way into the Land; as the Gulfof Venice, &c. But if it be very large,tisrather called an Inland Sea ; as the BaltickSea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea,or the Arabian Gulf, &c. And a small Partof the Sea thus environed with Land isusually called a Bay , If it be but a verysmall Part, or, as it were, a small Arm ofthe Sea that runs but a few Miles between Creekorthe Land, it is called a Creek or Haven. 18. A Streight is a narrow Passage lying AStreightbetween two Shores, whereby two Seas arejoined together; as the Streights of Dover,between the Britijh Channel and the Ger-man Sea; the Streights of Gibraltar , be-tween the Atlantick and the Mediterranean

Sea. The Mediterranean itself is also some-times called the Streights.
