the shells and grenades to be filled and deposited in secureplaces: this should be done before the enemy opens his bat-teries. The amuzettes or wall-pieces with their ammu-nition are carried to the advanced works, particularly onthe side where the enemy is breaking ground ; and the bar-bette batteries furnished with powder and shot, and a de-tachment of men for firing at the parties of the enemy thatadvance to reconnoitre the works, or drive in the out-postsof the garrison: the officer charged with this duty, afterreceiving directions from the governor with respect to theparties detached from the garrison, should remain on thebatteries during the whole day, to seize every opportunityof annoying the enemy.

An officer of the civil branch is appointed to assist thestore-keeper, through whose hands all issues of stores mustpass, as he is best acquainted where each article is depo-sited ; this officer is intrusted with the key of the maga-zine, whence the daily issues of powder are made : the keysof the other magazines remain according to custom withthe governor and store-keeper.

It may be necessary during the siege to project shot andshells to different distances according to the situation of thebesiegers park or powder magazines ; the following tabletherefore shews the ranges of guns and mortars : the chargesare supposed to he -§ of the weight of the ball for musquets,&c. j of the weight of the foot for 4 and 8 prs. ; and f- for16 and 32 prs. The chambers of the mortars are elliptical,and filled with powder; those of the stone-mortars are inform of a truncated cone.
