Page sets forth, from the Authority of MSS. Sothat if more of the Doctors genuine Readingshad been well attested, he would have takenmore of them into his new Text, and that with-out such strong Attestations he had not admittedso many. What MSS. he deemed most authen-tick he has not told us. But this I have observed, that no single Authority weighs so much withour Author, as that of the Alexandrian Manu-script. He generally inclines to the Readings ofthat antient Copy, and sometimes prefers them toall other MSS. Versions and Fathers. And yetevident it is, that he did not make that MS. hisStandard for receiving or rejecting Dr. Millssgenuine Readings. For I have observed above360 Passages, where he has preferred the printedText to the Lections of that MS. though re-commended by the Doctor , as genuine : And onthe other Hand, he has departed from that Textin near Eighty Instances, where it agrees with theAlexandrian Copy, merely, as it should seem,in Reliance on Mills's Judgment.

Again, it may be thought, that the Editor'sRule was, to take in such of the Doctor s genu-ine Readings, as had the greatest Number ofMSS. &c. to vouch for them. But though thisis frequently the Cafe, it is far from being con-stantly so. For Abundance of Instances may beproduced to the contrary, viz. of Readings de-clared by Mills to be genuine, and confirmed byvery numerous as well as weighty Authorities, which yet are not to be found in the new Text.

Upon the whole, I cannot find that any oneor more Rules have been constantly observed in
