Writers, whilst the Generality of them relatedto Trifles, and made no manner of Alteration inthe Meaning of Scripture : For which Reason hecontented himself with suggesting his Thoughtsto the World on this Occasion, and proceededno farther: But our Editor was moved by noneof these Considerations ; he boldly inserts intothe Text as many new Readings as pleased hisFancy ; and so little did he consult Expediencein these Corrections, that more than a FourthPart of them are quite over-looked in his NewVersion, which, in so many Instances, agrees withthe Old Text, and contradicts the New.
Secondly^ Very many of the new Readingsmight be produced, that are no better supportedby Criticism or Authorities than the Old ones,were it not that a worse Species is yet behind,which deserve a particular Enumeration. For,
‘Thirdly , Several of our Editor’s pretended Cor-rections are really so many Depravations of thetrue Text, as it stood before in Stephens $ Edition,of which I shall give a Specimen. And of thisNumber first are some that Dr. Mills recommendsas genuine.
