SECT. IV.
The new Version contains needless and ab-surd Additions to the Text.
I. Matt. x. 28. Fear not those •who can onlyhill the Body: But cannot hurt the Soul '.
T H E Word only is quite needless here :What follows necessarily supposes it.
II. Matt. xviii. 15. Now in Case such a Bro-ther do you an Injury , &c.
The Greek only says, is thy Brother do theean Injury , not referring to any Sort os Brotherbefore-mentioned. The Brother spoken of in theforegoing Ver. is described in the new Versionas a Person of much Humility: And yet such aBrother is here supposed capable of offering anInjury, of persisting in it after private and pub-lick Admonition, and in the End of deservingExcommunication for Contumacy: Which is nextto absurd.
III. Matt. xxiii. z. Therefore whatsoever mo-ral Precepts they bid you observe , thoseobserve and Practice.
Moral Precepts is the Interpreter’s own Ad-dition, and a very silly one. For who can doubt, but that Mosess Chair gave the Scribes and Pha-risees an Authority to decide in ceremonial, aswell as moral Cafes ; and that the Jews wereobliged to observe every Decision of theirs, whichdid not hinder moral Duties.
