Many other needless Additions to the Text might be specified, if Occasion were. But whatmakes this Fault the less excusable in the newVersion is, that the Translator never distinguisheshis own Additions, just or unjust, from the Text .No Version of the new Testament can be madewithout some Insertions. Because the Greek Lan-guage has many Ellipses, which must be suppliedin a Translation, to make it at all intelligible. There may also be Occasion to add connectiveParticles, and now and then Words, that tend tothe necessary Illustration of the Sense. In suchCases as these, our EngUJJj Translators have notscrupled to add in their Version. But then, forthe Satisfaction of mere EngliJJ) Readers, they ge-nerally printed their Additions in a distinct Cha-racter ; So that the most illiterate have it in theirPower to know when such Accessions have beenmade. Whilst our new Interpreter, who infinite-ly exceeds all that ever went before him in Li-berties of this Sort, gives us both Text and Ad-dition all in one fort of Letter. So that everyThing in his Version passes upon the English Reader for the very Words of Scripture. Butis this giving us a clear View of Christianity striptof all Disguises, which the Editor pretends wasthe Thing that put him upon the ^Drudgery ofthe present Essay ? Does not he thereby ratherinvolve it in a new and impenetrable Disguisehimself? If the Liberty he takes was generallyallowed, it would be in the Power of ArtfulMen to obscure every received Doctrine of theChristian Religion, and to impose their ownfancies on the World, as the Oracles of God .
