XL James iv. 12. New Version. There is but, one Legislator and Jud. e, he that hasthe Lower of Life aud Death.

This is a Stroke at Ecclesiastical Legislationand Judgment. But this is neither the necessary, nor the probable Sense of St. James's Words. They may mean no more,. than that Christ isthe only Lawgiver and Judge, from whose E-dicts and Sentence there lies no Appeal. If theApostle had meant more than this, it is extream-ly probable, that, in a Matter of such high Con-sequence, he would have been more explicit, andhave said, tvt 0 objxdyjevQ^ %. r. A. However, most certain it is, that, according to the Punctua-tion of the new Text, which has no Comma after ^mine is the only possible Sense of the o-riginal Words, and the Version is necessarily false.

SECT. IX.
