Council, says nothing of any Differences amongthe Learned, concerning the Place of its Celebra-tion. Besides, I think there could be no Room fora Dispute of this Kind. For in all the MSS. ofthe Greek Councils, except the Bodleian , and in allthe Printed Editions , and in Dionysms Exiguus'sLatin Version, the Inscription at the Head of theCanons expresiy lays, that it was held in Phrygia Pacatiana or Capatiana. Which Words j* are pro-miscuously used both in the Notitia of the Em-pire, and also in the Councils. Unless thereforethere were two Laodiceas in that Phrygia , whichhad the Epithet of Pacatiana , to disiinguish itfrom the other Phrygia , lying in the same A sumProvince, and called Phrygia Saint ar is, of whichAntiquity is wholly silent, there can be no Pre-tence for debating about the Place of this Pro-vincial Council. As to the other Circumstance ofthis Council, the Lime when it was holden, laterWriters have divided about it: Baronius , and afterhim, Binius, supposes it earlier than the Councilof Nice. But Bishop Beveridge, in the Place a-bove referred to, has shewn the Falsiiood of thatCalculation from the Eighth Canon, and that bythe Order, in which the Canons of the severalCouncils, that compose the Collection, called theCode of the Canons of the Universal Church , doconstantly lye, thole of Laodicea still coming afterthole of Antioch , the Synod of Laodicea must havebeen later than that of Antioch, which was held Anno341. How long after thisPer/Wit was held, we cannotprecisely determine ; Only we are sure the Councilof Laodicea was prior to the Second General One,t Id. ibid.
