CHAP. III.

Provmg the Genuineness of the Revela-tions from internal CharaBers.

T H E Evidence of Testimony has already ap-peared clear for St. Johns being Author ofthe Revelations, and nothing is found in the Book itself, that calls the Truth of that Tradition intoQuestion. But besides this, there are some Cha-racters in the Apocalypse , which positively bespeakit to be the Work of that Apostle and of noneelse, and which would have induced us to assignthe Book to him, tho History had not so general-ly done it before.

For first , the Author of the Revelations callshimself John, without any further Distinction:And therefore is most likely to have been theprincipal Person of that Name then Living, i. e.John the Evangelist.

He tells us ch. i. v. i. that God lent the Reve-lation by his Angel to his Servant John. Againv. 4. the Epistle to the seven Churches is writtenin the Name of John. Again v. 9. J John, whoam also your Brother, &c. Once more ch. xxi. v. 2And / John Jaw the holy City, &c. See also ch. xxii.v. 8. Now from this frequent Mention of Johnthe Author of the Revelations, without any fur-ther Mark to distinguish him from others thenliving, of the fame Name, we are naturally ledto suppose, that he was the principal John of hisTime, and consequently John the Evangelist.
