. This Character of the Writer of the Revela-tions, was plainly intended to distinguish him fromall others of the same Name and Profession. Butin whatever Sense we understand the Words Re-cord and 'testimony, they point out John the A-postle. For if we are to take them for a writtenGospel, no other John save the Apostle of thatName, was strictly an Evangelist. If they meana publick Declaration of the Character, Historyand Doctrines of Jesus Christ , by preaching only,still do they sufficiently denote John the Apostle.For no other John in those Days and in that Partof the World, was so emphatically the Witness ofGod and of Jesus Christ , as to be marked out bythat Periphrasis, and therefore he only is chara-cterized Rev. i, 2. Besides, the concluding Wordsof that Verse, ctra ts <Hk undoubtedly appropriateall that goes before to John the Apostle. For theydeclare the Person spoken of, to have been anEye-Witness to the subject Matter of his Testi-mony. Especially if instead of o<ra ts dk, webarely read ctra elk. A Lection preferred by Dr.Mills, and vouched for by the Alexandrian, andby ten other Greek MSS. by the Vulgar, Syriack and Æthiopick Versions, by Dionysus Alexandri-nus and the Complutenstan Edition. Accordingto which Reading, the Sense will be this: Whobare Record of the Word of God, and of the testi-mony of Jesus Christ , which things he had seen *.
