So that p. 93. contradicts p. 74. unlessour Author can (hew which Way an Event shouldcontribute to the favourable Reception os a Book,where it was universally received before. Equal-ly false is what he fays, p. 75. that after the Council of Carthage , the Christian World was seen to fall into a kind of Schism , and to draw out into two opposite Bodies, the East against" the Weft, and the Greek Church against the" Latin . 7 ' For the Greek Church was not uni-form in itself upon the Subject of the Revelations ,and therefore could not in a Body draw up againstthe Latins. Nor did any of the different Sidesrun even into Disputes, and much less into a. Schismon this Score. .

From the contrary mistaken Opinion it is, thatCyril of Alexandria is charged with going overto the Latins, because'he quotes the Revelationsas a canonical Book: Whereas in Truth he onlyacted therein agreeably to the Custom of his ownChurch, which always received the Revelations asCanonical ; and so did many other Greeks of thefame Century, without any Reproach from theirCountrymen for so doing. But tho Cyrils Con-temporaries forgave this Attachment to the Re-velations, the DscourJer seems deeply to stomachit; and therefore loads him with much imperti-nent Scandal. He throws in his Teeth his abort-ing the Virgin Mary's Title of the Mother of God :As if it justified the Adoration paid to her by theChurch of Rome : But in spite of this Sneer, theMemory of that Patriarch will ever be dear to all
