which I have reafon to conGcler as accurate , the numberof copies of the ball of Cruzada, exported to Peru on eachnew publication , is 1,171,933; to New Spain 2,649,326.I am informed , that but few Indians purchafe bulls , andthat they are fold chiefly to tire Spanifh inhabitants , andthofe of mixed race, fo that the number of Spaniards, andpeople of a mixed race, will amount by this mode of com-putation to at leaft three millions.
The number of inhabitants in many of the towns inSpanifh America , may give us fome idea of the excent ofpopulation, and correct the inaccurate, but popular notionentertained in Great Britain , concerning the weak and defolateftate of their colonies. The city of Mexico contains at leaft130,000 people. It is remarkable that Torquemada , whowrote his Monarqiria Indiana about the year 1612, reckonsthe inhabitants of Mexico at that time to be only 7000Spaniards and gooo Indians. Lib. iii. c. 26. Puebla de losAngeles contains above 60,000 Spaniards , and people of amixed race. Villa Segnor , p. 247. Guadalaxara containsabove 30,000 , excluiive of Indians. Id. ii. 206. Towns of a fecond clafs are ftill more numerous. Thecities in the moft thriving fettlements of other Europeannations in America cannot be compared with thefe.
Such are the decached accounts of the number of peoplein feveral towns , which I found fcattered in authors whomI thought worthy of credit. But I have obtained an enume-ration of the inhabitants of the towns in the province of Quito ,on the accuracy of which I can rely; and I communicate itto the Public, both to gratify curioiity , and to redlify themiftaken notion which I have mentioned. St. Francilco deQuito contains between 30 and 60,000 people of all thedifferent races. Belides the city , there are in the Cwregi-miento 29 cm as or parifhes eftablifhed in the principalvillages, each of which has finaller hamlets depending uponit.
