THE TEMPLE OF FAME.
Tli e conflant tenour of wliofe well-fpent days 33oNo lefs deferv’da juft return of praife.
But flraight the direful Frump of Hander founds;Through the big dome the doubling thunderbounds;Loud as the burft of cannon rends the flues,
The dire report through ev’ry region flies, 335In ev’ry car incelfant rumours rung,
And gatb’ring fcandals grew on ev’ry tongue. From the black trumpet’s rufly concave brokeSulphureous flames, and clouds of rolling fmoke:The pois’nous vapour blots the purple Ikies, 340And withers all before it as it flics.
A troop came next, who crowns and armour wore,And proud defiance in their looks they bore:
For thee (they cry’d) amidfl alarms and flrife,
We fail’d in tempefts down the ftream of life ; 345For thee whole nations fill’d with flames and blood,Andfvvatn to empire through the purple flood.
