UNDER PETER THE GREAT 19

made a signal to leave off chasing. The Swedesbore down upon them and, the Vice-Admiral givingthe signal to renew the chase, the Swedes againendeavoured to make off. When they were justwithin gun shot the Vice-Admiral made the signal tocome to an anchor; some random shot exchanged, the Russians returning anchored by their flag; andthe Swedes under the north shore. The windshifting by the next morning gave the Russ a greatadvantage, so that in two hours space they mighthave cut off the Swedes retreat; but, neglecting thisopportunity, the Swedes plyed 1 to the windward andmade the best of their way to sea. No more of themwere seen this summer, except a small snow, takenby the Russ galleys near Wickolax when they plun-dered that place this year. In the winter Count deBuss, an Italian, Rear-Admiral of the galleys, exhibited a complaint of maleconduct against Vice-Admiral Cruys in the affair above related ; but wasnot seaman enough to allege the most materialfaults committed. The right points of this chargewere answered without much immediate prejudiceto Vice-Admiral Cruys character.
