PRESIDENTEarl Spencer, K.G.
The Council propose to include among the forth-coming volumes a collection of naval and nauticalsongs, ballads, broadsides, forebitters, shanties, &c.,many of which—interesting reminiscences of thewars of last century and of the old navy of woodand canvas—live only in memory, and are fastdying out.
Such a work can only be carried out satisfac-torily by the co-operation of many ; what one hasnot, another has ; what one has forgotten, anothermay remember; and an appeal is therefore madeto the Members of the Society, and, through them,to their friends, and to all who take pleasure infighting against the decaying influences of time, tosend copies of any such verses (entire ballads orfragments—no fragments too small—with musicwhen possible) as they may have or can write downfrom memory. It is hoped that in this way manypieces may yet be rescued from that oblivion whichhas already, it is to be feared, engulfed a greatnumber.
The volume will be edited by Mr. HenryNewbolt (14 Old Square, Lincoln’s Inn, London,W.C.) and Mr. C. H. Firth (33 Norham Road,Oxford), to whom, or to the Secretary, all contri-butions and suggestions may be sent.
May 1899.
