funnel-shaped, spreading out again at the lower part, in which are eight deepsinkings made to assist in giving a firm hold; the under part of the base ishollowed out in a similar manner; the cover is dome-shaped, with a conical knob.The decoration consists of panels cut out of the solid, and with the ornamentalframework in low relief; there are four on the body and four on the cover, allrepresenting hunting scenes of various kinds, minutely engraved. 885. Covered Cup, of crystalline glass, engraved and gilt; the bowl isfunnel-shaped, and has a medallion with the bust of Frederick William King ofPrussia (1713—1710), surmounted by a crowned eagle. On each side arc eagles,and flags, on which may be distinguished the phoenix flying to the sun (a badge ofthe king), and the eagle of Brandenburg; beloAV is another eagle. On the cover aretrophies, consisting of kettle drums, drums, flags, and cannon-balls, and the wholeis surmounted by a heavy cut and gilt knob. The stem is fluted and alternately gilt;the foot matches the stem and the cover. Height 12£ in.
886. Covered Cup, of material and form similar to the last. On the bowlare two medallions in relief, one of ruby glass, the other of opaque turquoise;they each have engraved on them the cipher E. P., surmounted by the imperialRussian crown : between them are circular engraved medallions; one representsrays shining from heaven on a table, on which are placed a crown, a sceptre, andan orb, with the motto in gold, u der erfullung gekechtester hoffnung” (Tothe fulfilment of the most righteous expectation). The other encloses a figure ofMinerva, and has the legend “sigende beherschende durch liebe und avohl-thaten ” (Conquering and mastering through love and good deeds). The coaut,stem and foot, are ornamented Avith gadroons, partially gilt. Height 12f in.
The initials are those of Elizabeth PetroAma, daughter of Peter the Great, Avhoascended the throne of Russia December 5th, 1741, and died 1762.
