costume of tlie eighteenth century ; on the opposite side of the glass is a star withthe motto beneath, Inclinat non cogit, and inscribed in a scroll extendingabove the medallion are the words, M K Cornelis de Gijselaar Pensionaris teDordrecht. Height 6-§ in.

Cornelius van Gijselaar was born in 1751 at Gorinchem, of which town hobecame Pensionary in 1776; in 1779 he was elected to the same office atDordrecht. In 1784 he married, and on that occasion the glass may have beenengraved. After occupying a very prominent position in the stormy politics ofhis time he retired from public life, and died at Leyden in 1815.

902. Wine Glass, having a slightly tapering bowl, resting on a longcolumnar stem, enclosing latticinio filigree work. On the surface of the boAvl anelegant design is apparent when held up to the light, being a boy and girlreleasing a bird from its cage, above which is a scroll, inscribed aurea libertas.The design was produced by means of fluoric acid, like an etching, by coveringthe surface with wax, and then, after outlining and stippling the subject throughit with a steel point, by pouring the acid over the enclosed surface, to remainuntil the bared material became sufficiently bitten or punctured. This process issaid to have been discovered by Schwanhard of Nuremberg, in the seventeenthcentury. Height 6-j| in.

903. Large Goblet, having a fine oviform bowl, resting on a stem enclosingornamental air-bubbles. The bowl is entirely covered with a picture, etched withthe diamond and acid, in the manner of chalk or stipple engraving, so as toproduce a striking effect. The subject is Bacchus seated on a barrel, surroundedby Satyrs, Bacchantes, Fauns, and goats, etc., grouped under masses of foliage ;the whole occupies about three-fourths of the surface, the intermediate space beingfilled up with an entablature, surrounded by foliage, bearing the inscription :

Het draivenbloet,

Dat lieflyk zoet,

Noemt Saloman een spotter,

Diet gulzig clrinkt,

En brast en kliukt,

Wort vroeg benooit en zotter.

904. Wine Glass, of an emerald green, with a baluster stem ornamentedwith masks in relief, and partially gilt. On the bowl are the following devices ingilding:The arms of Nassau-Orange under a coronet, probably for Henry PhilipWilliam, Prince of Orange, who died 1618 ; the arms of Nassau, as borne byMaurice, Prince of Orange, who died 1625 ; and between them the device of thelatter, consisting of a tree cut down, while a new stem is springing from its root;above, the motto,Tandem fit svrcvlvs arbor (The sucker at length becomesa tree).
