plate, representing a victorious general standing before a seated figure; on a shield,near the latter, is inscribed felicitas tiberi, while behind is a figure of Victorywith a shield inscribed vie. avg. (Victoria Augusti.) It is probable, therefore, thatthis represents G ermanic us appearing before Tiberius, after his great victories onthe Rhine. Part of the tang of the sword remains, but the handle is wanting.With it was found a medallion, apparently representing the head of Germanicus,but whether it belonged to the sheath or handle is not certain. This sword wasdiscovered August 10, 1848, in a field in the lower part of Mayence, and anaccount of it has been published by Lersch, Das sogenannte Schwert des Tiberius,Bonn, 1849; by Klein , Abbildungen von Mainzer Alterthmnem, 1850; and byBecker, Gottinger Philologus, 1850; see also the Jahrbucher of the RhenishAntiquaries, xiv. p. 185 ; xvii. p. 39 ; and xxv. p. 113 ; Gentleman’s Magazine, Jan.,1851; Roach Smith, Collectanea Antigua, vol. iv., p. 197. It has also beendescribed in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries, 2nd series, vol. 3,p. 359. This remarkable relic passed from the hands of its finder, M. Gold, ofMayence, into the possession of Mr. Henry Farrer, at whose sale, in 1866, it waspurchased by Mr. Slade, and presented to the British Museum. Length 2 ft.
7. A diminutive Antique Roman Bottle, of onyx, of a cylindrical form, andwith a narrow neck, probably intended for perfumes. Height 2 in.
8. A Right Hand, of life size, carved out of rock crystal; it is broken at thewrist, and the thumb and greater part of the fingers are wanting. . It has probablyformed part of an antique statue, composed of various materials. Nothing isknown of its history, but a drawing of it by Santo Bartoli is preserved in theRoyal Library at Windsor; it is No. 1207 in a volume obtained from the Albanifamily, lettered Disegni di varie Anticliita: Nettuno. Length 5^ in.
9. A leaden Case or Box, in which was discovered the beautiful glass urn,catalogued above under No. 216. It is made to fit the urn, and is of an invertedconical form with an overlapping cover, from which projects a small knob. Foundin Sardinia. Height 12^ in.
10. A collection of Antiquities, found in a grave at Leuna, near Merseburg,with the two engraved glass bowls, catalogued above under Nos. 320, 321. Theyconsist of four earthen vases somewhat rude in form, two bronze vessels, twodiminutive bronze spears, probably ornaments, a buckle, two spoons, and fivebronze fibulae, mostly of barbarous work. Presented to the British Museum, 1867.
11. Jet Ornaments and a Shell, found in a small stone cist at Cologne, withthe disk of gilt and enamelled glass, described above under No. 317. These are anarmlet with a denticulated edge, two pins with globular heads, a pine cone,perhaps belonging to another pin, and a medallion with a loop for suspensionornamented with a head of Medusa; there is also a cockle shell which had beenburnt. These objects are engraved in the Jahrbucher of the Rhenish Antiquaries,Heft xli.
