69. The Gospels of St. Luke and St. John, written in Germany at the endof the 12th or beginning of the 13th century, and having the initial letter to eachbook finely illuminated. The two other Gospels of this Evangelarium are in thecollection of Sir Thomas Phillipps. It appears to have belonged to the nunneryof Heiningen, in the diocese of Hildesheim.

On one side of the binding are plates of Limoges enamel of the 13th century,representing the Saviour in glory, within a rich border. This cover is engravedin Lacroix and Sdrd, Le Moyen Age et la Renaissance, tom. v. Reliure , and inLibri, Monuments inedits , PI. vii. From the Soltykoff Collection.

70. A thin Quarto, on Vellum, containing Capitoli e ordinationi dellacompagnia secondo la sua proprieta decta Opera di Pieta, &c. This guild seemsto have been established at Empoli, in Tuscany, under confirmation of PietroAndrea Gamaro, of Bologna, Vicar-General of the Archbishop of Florence, 1529.The volume is in its original binding of wooden boards, and covered with darkleather, tooled in gold, and on one side is inserted a coloured drawing.

71. A Ducale, or original commission from Pietro Lando, Doge of Venice,to Niccolo Nani, as Podesta and Captain of Istria, 1543. It has in it the arms andportrait of Nani, and is in the original binding of red morocco. On one side isinscribed nigolai nani, on the other mdxxxxiii.

72. A Volume, containing copies of Bulls of Pope Paul III., and of letters ofPrinces, etc , relating to the Council of Trent, 1545-6: collected from the originalrecords, and written manu propria by Angelo Massarelli of San Severino,Secretary to the Council, as certified by Olaus Magnus, Archbishop of Upsala, andGiov. Pietro Ferretti, of Ravenna, Bishop of Milo, 15th February, 1548. Folio,on vellum; in its original binding of dark morocco, with gilt tooling.

73. Canon Missse; additse sunt Praeparatio ad missam et Orationes quaeab Episcopis [dicuntur] cum solemniter vel private celebrant; necnon gratiarumactiones missse sacrificio peracto. Juxta correctionem novi missalis. Written onvellum in a beautiful Italian writing, of the beginning of the 18th century. Infine red morocco binding of the time, with the arms of Cardinal Piccolomini.

74. A small Volume, written on paper by Esther Inglis; a wonderfulspecimen of caligrapliy. It is entitled u Le livre de lEcclesiaste ensemble leCantique de Salomon, escrites en diverses sortes de lettres par Esther Anglois,Frangoise, a Lislebourg en Escosse, 1599. Dedicated to Anthony Bacon, andcontaining his arms as well as a portrait of the writer. It is bound in embroideredvelvet. A full description of this volume was communicated to the Society ofAntiquaries by Mr. R. R. Holmes, and is printed in the Proceedings, 2nd series,vol. i., p. 316.
