Matter, 4. All our doubts about the inactivity, or resistanceof matter, may be solved, by considering, what force ormoment in a moving body is, i. 58, zo. -5. The necessity of its resistance, and its connection-

with solidity, more particularly evidenced, by consideringits use, both in our own and other animals bodies, in oneparticular respect,viz. that of progressive motion, eitherof the whole, or parts thereof, i. 66, 23, 24, 2;. Onlysusceptible of pressure, tension, and pulsion, because of re-sistance, ibid. As a solid extended substance, it must ne-cessarily resist all change of its state of rest or motion, i,73, 26. Otherwise it would follow, that two contradicto-ry propositions could be both true, ibid. And it is much-to be doubted, whether there be any matter in the worldbut what suffers pressure, r, ibid. Another short and easyway of proving, that this vis inertia;, or resistance, is asessential a property of matter, as solidity itself, i. 76, 27.Its being a solid extended substance, thews there can beno universal plenum, i. 82, 2.

matter, ab extra, is wonderfully plain, by considering themotion of the earth, and other planets, i. 101, 6. Itsresistance, to change its state of rest, greatest, where theforce of inactivity, to remain in that state, is least, i. 11,,,10, and i. 115, 11, x, ibid. Matter in the bodies of a-siimals, resists as much the change of its state, as any ci-ther matter, i. 119, 12, ctf seqq. and requires as much anmimaterial mover, ibid.
