that the triglyphs of the portico project before the face ofthe epistylium, and so far accord with the explanation givenby Vitruvius of the invention of triglyphs.

In this instance, as in those already mentioned, we mustbe prepared to expect a difference in the proportionateheight of the columns from that which is given them in thetext of our author. Accordingly, instead of the height beingseven times the diameter, it is found to be somewhat less thansix and one-fifth. The proportions of the upper and lowerdiameters are, notwithstanding, nearly the same; for if thediminution of the shaft had been one-third of the modulus,the diameter at the hypotrachelium must have been 2.5.59,instead of 2.5.3; which is the actual diameter at the top ofthe shaft, in the columns of the portico.

The portico of Philip has no remains of a front: butseveral columns in one of the flanks, with their entablature,remain entire. In the flank there is no inequality in theintervals between the columns; but in designinga conjecturalfront, the central intercolumniation is supposed to havebeen wider than the others by the introduction of onetriglyph and one metopa more in the zophorus.
