The middle area of the basilica was 120 feet long and 60wide: whence it follows, that the intervals between thecolumns of the sides and the ends were unequal. Thedistance between the antae of the pronaos could not havebeen quite 49 feet, whereas the width of the pronaos itselfmust have been 60 feet, in order that the culmen, orridge of the roof, might unite with that of the basilica, in themanner described by Vitruvius. Hence the antae could nothave terminated the lateral walls of the temple, but must haveprojected on each side into the pronaos; in conformity withthe description, which states that they extended forward soas to be in contact with the extremities of the circular frontof the tribunal. The chord of the front is said to have been46 feet, which would have been, within less than an inch, the extent measured between the bases of the antae.
