the air, as they are from the earth hy means of clouds, there can be no doubt of the necessity of making spa-cious and pleasant walks open to the air in every city. That they may always be dry and free from mud, thefollowing method must he adopted. They must be dugout and drained to the lowest possible level; and onthe right and left sewers must be constructed; and inthe walls thereof, towards the walk, drains are laid, withan inclination to the sewer. When this is done, theplace is filled in with charcoal; over which the walks arestrewed with gravel, and levelled. Thus, from the na-tural porosity of the charcoal, and the inclination of thedrains towards the sewer, the quantity of water is car-ried off, and the passages remain dry and unaffected hythe moisture. In these places the ancients also madedepots for the reception of things necessary for the useof the city. For in case of the city being under block-ade, all things are more easily provided than wood. Saltis with facility laid in beforehand; corn, from the publicor private stores, is soon collected ; and the want of thatis remedied hy the use of garden herbs, flesh, or pulse.Water is obtained either hy digging new wells, or hycollecting it from the roofs of buildings; hut wood, which is absolutely necessary for cooking the food, isprovided with difficulty and trouble; and that which isslowly procured is quickly consumed. In such timesthese walks are opened, and an allowance distributed tothe tribes, according to their numbers. Thus they areconducive to two good purposes; to health in time ofpeace, and to preservation in time of war. If walks areprovided after these directions not only behind the sceneof the theatre, but also adjoining the temples of all thegods, they will be of great utility in every city. As theyhave been sufficiently explained, the method of arrangingthe different parts of baths will now follow.
