LAKE DWELLINGS IN THE MOND SEE (AUSTRIA ).

By Dr. M. Much.'

The investigations of the settlements in this lake began in themonth of March, 1872, for at this period of the year the wateris the clearest, and many implements of stone, bone, and potterycould be picked up from the surface of the lake-bottom, althoughthe water was 12 or 13 feet deep.

This lake dwelling is found in front of theoutletof the lake, between the little inn called the 4 Lake and the foresters houseat Burgau. It is somewhat difficult to give the ezact size, asso much of it is covered with sand, but as far as it can be ascer-tained it is probably from 90 to 110 yards long and from 33 to43 yards broad, so that it may cover an area of more than3,500 square yards. It does not, however, take any regulärfigure, but the outline varies according to the depth of thewater. The piles also do not seem to be very definitely arranged;they are sometimes very close together, and at other times arewide apart. They are from 3£ to 8 inches in diameter, and areperfectly soft, except that part which was driven into thebottom, which is in good preservation.

The whole of the objects of stone and the pottery foundhere were covered with a thick coat of mud and lake marl.Stone hammers, celts, and mealing stones were obtained intolerable abundance. Numerous slabs were found amongstthepiles- Some of them were polishing stones, and came chieflyfrom the mountains north of the lake. Some of them may havebeen hearth stones.

The earthenware vessels will be found more fully describedhereafter. The clay from which they were made was mixed
