Jahrh. gebildetes Wort für das Niederknien auf beide oder auf ein Knie als Zeichen der Ehrerbietung, wahrscheinlich orientalischen Ursprungs (Proskynese), bei den Germanen erst mit dem Christentum bekannt, als rechtsrituelle Formhandlung reicht der Kniefall vom Zeichen der Unterordnung unter eine höhere Macht bis zur völligen Demütigung und Erniedrigung
