When the reseau was decorated with a pattern, it was termed lacis, or darned netting, and, combined with point coupe,much used for bed-furniture and altar-cloths. 22

In the inventory of Sir John Foskewe (modern Fortescue),Knight, time of Henry VIII., we find in the hall,A hanging ofgreen saye, bordered with darning.

Queen Mary Stuart, previous to the birth of James I. (loGO),made a will, which still exists, with annotations in her own hand-writing. 23 After disposing of her jewels and objects of value, sheconcludes by bequeathing tous mes ouvrages masches et colletsaux 4 Maries, a Jean Stuart, et Marie Sunderland et toutes lesfilles.Masches, 24 withpunti a maglia, being among thenumerous terms applied to this species of work.

These ouvrages masches were doubtless the work of QueenMary and her ladies. She had learned the art at the Frenchcourt, where her sister-in-law, Reine Margotherself also aprisoner for many long yearsoccupied herself in the samemanner, for we find in her accounts, 25 Pour des moulles estesguilles pour faire rezeuil la somme de mi L. toum.
