Groat efforts, and with success, were made for the improvementof the thread manufacture, for the purchase of which article at Lille200,000/. were annually sent from Scotland to France. Badlyspun yarn was seized and burned by the stamp master; of this wehave frequent mention. 8

Whether about the year 1773 any change had taken place inthe legislation of the customs of Scotland, and they had liccomeregulated by English law, we cannot say, but suddenly constantadvertisements of Brussels lace and fine point appear in the Gazette, and this at the very time Loch was doing his bestto stir up once more Scotch patriotism with regard to manu-factures. 10

The Scotch Foresters set the example at their meeting in 1700,and thenwe hear nothing more on the matter.

About this period, a Mr. Brotherton,of Leith, seems to have mndo n discoverywhich was but a preludo to the lmbbin-oet. It' is thus described in the * WeeklyMagazine of 1772:A new inventionbus lately been iliac,overed by Mr. llrother-ton, in Leith, for working black silk Incoor white thread lace on a loom, to imitateony pattern whatever, and the luce donem this way looks fully ns well asifsewed,

and comes much chenper. It is done anybreadth, from three inches to three-quarters of a yard wide.
