6° Examine the liquor out of which the saltshave been taken; if it does not effervesce withthe marine acid, evaporate it to dryness, andweigh the residuum; if it does effervesce withacids, saturate it with the vitriolic or marine,and evaporate it to one-fourth of the whole ,*w'hen cool, take out the saline residuum, eva-porate the remainder to dryness, and weigh it:tliis gives the coaly matter, which may be triedby projecting it on melted nitre, with whichit will deflagrate. The half of this coalymatter call the coaly supplement of lib. I shallsuppose it to amount to 12grs. and denote itby C.

7° The filtred water, No. IV. is next tobe gently evaporated to nearly one pint, andthen suffered to rest for three days in a coolplace, that it may deposit its saline contents, ifit contains any; and these being taken out, theremainder must be evaporated nearly to dry-ness, and its saline and other contents examined.How this should be done, I shall not mention,the methods being too various, tedious, and oftoo little consequence; few salts occur exceptgypsum, which is easily distinguished, The
