covy, which being extraneous to the fubject, and often erroneous, fnall be here omitted.But the inftructions bf Sebaftian Cabot deferve prefervation, on account of their curi-

ofity, and the celebrity of the author, not to mention that the find Englifh voyage ofdifcovery deferves to be detailed with all its circumftances; and in a plan of this extentthe Gothic building may fometimes form an agreeable variety amidft modern edifices.,

Ordinances, injlruclions, and advertifements of and for the direction of the intended voyagefor Cathay, compiled, made, and delivered by the right worfhipful M. Sebajlian Cabota,efquire, governor of the myftery and coinpany oj the merchants adventurers forthe difco-very of regions, dominions, iflands, and places unknown, the cyth day of May, in the yearof our Lord God 1553, and in the yth year of the reign of our moji dreadfovereign lord,Edward the Sixth, by the grace of God, king of England, France, and Ireland , defendetof the faith, and of the church of England and Ireland , in earth Jupreme head.

Fird, the captain-general, with the pilot-major, the mailers, merchants, and otherofficers, to be so knit and accorded in unity, love, conformity, and obedience in everydegree on all sides, that no diffention, variance, or contention may rife or fpring betwixtthem and the mariners of this company, to the damage or hindrance of the voyage ; forthat diffention (by many experiences) hath overthrown many notable intended, andlikely enterprifes and exploits.

Item, for as much as every perfon hath given an oath to be true, faithful, andloyal lubjecls, and liegemen to the kings moll excellent majefty, his heirs aud fuc-ccffors, and for the oblervation of all laws and ftatutes, made for the prefervation of hismolt excellent majefty, and his crown imperial of his realms of England and Ireland ,
