388 FORTIa’s TRAVELS IN SWEDEN .

the Goeutha, make for Lahall , follow the courfe of the river as far as Trolhcetta, andtliency take the road to Stockholm by Borjled , &c. Near Weneriborg, on the oppofitefide of the Goeutha, are mounts Halleberg and Huneberg, in which are found quarries ofalum, trapp, black chalk, and lapisfaillus in abundance. From Weneriborg to Stock-holm is forty-three miles and five-eighths. The whole of this road is excellent, particu-larly from Marieftadt: in the middle of January we were not under the neceflity ofufing a fledge before we arrived there, and even afterwards on account of want offnow; at the laft ftage we were obliged to take our carriage off and travel on wheels;for on the 15th of January we faw verdure at the very gates of Stockholm . You pafsthrough the lmall town Lidkoeuping and Marieftadt. You do not change horfes atthefe towns, which are neither worth the trouble of flopping to examine. They arepleafantly fituated upon lake Wener, which is vifible from the great fquare of Lidkceu-ping. After palling Hofva you enter Nericia, where is a cuftom-houfe. The provinceof Skaraburg, which forms a part of Weftrogothia, and which we have been traverfing, has certain fpots which the amateur of natural hiftory may vifir, and will find fome cu-rious minerals, fuch are IQnnakulle, a quarry of alum and calcareous ftone ; Billingen,a quarry of alum. This mountain is fituated near the town of Skiceufde, between Fal-koeuping and Marieftadt, three miles and a quarter from the former, and five from thelatter. At this mountain many curious minerals may be procured; but, as it is of1 great extent, it will require fome time to examine all its remarkable parts. Black alumis difcovered here in flates, frequently enclofing petrified enthomolithes , lapis fuillus inballs, both great and fmall, folid, fparkling, granulated, and frequently encafing fmall en -thomolithes and petrified {hells. Spar of a conic form. Indurated and lamillated marl;clayey flate ; black folid trapp, granulated with fibres like ears of corn. Solid calca-reous ftone of a red, brown, and grey colour, in which are frequently found petrifiedorthocerathites and enthomolithes. Calcareous ftala&ites both white and yellow, fcarcelyat all porous within, although formed by depofits in layers, and undulated at the fur-face : in thefe fometimes leaves are found enclofed. Lamillated gypfum, both whiteand ftriated, in exceeding thin fheets between flates of alum. Free-ftone of many va-rious forts. Coal, folid and {hining externally, met with at times between flates ofalum at Multhorp. In order to colled as many of thefe minerals as pofiible, you fliouldconftantly give the preference in your fearch for them to thofe places where they havebeen found before, fuch as Timurdala , Multorp, Ulunda: Beck, Hallevad , &c.— Myjfe-berg , and Olleberg near Falkceuping. Here are found argillaceous flate, mixed with va-rious petrifactions, enthomolithes , and petrified {hells ; lapis fuillus , both folid and granu-lated ; folid red calcareous ftone ; flate of alum, &c. In this province are a numberof quarries of alum. None of the fpots above-mentioned are in the neighbourhoodof the above noted road except the firft, whither you may eafily go from Kalangen. All the towns along this road are wretched, notwithftanding GSurebro and Arboga becapitals. After palling by Lidkoeuping you enter into foreft land. CEurebro is fitu-ated on the extremity of lake' Hielmer, (at the mouth of a river that has a trifling fall, vifible from a ftone bridge,) which lake communicates with Mceler. Beyond Arbogayou perceive the canal which joins the two lakes ; there are fome very handfome lockswhich are deferving of notice. You enter Weftmania between Feilingibro and Arboga. From Arboga through Kioeuping to Skinjkatteberg is fix miles and a quarter; henceyou make a Ihort excurfion to Riddar-Rittann, the copper mines. Here yellow copperis found mixed with ore of black iron ; martial pyrites ; galena, ore of bifmuth in fcales,in a rocky granulated ftone ; ore of cobalt, fteely grained, of a rare defcription. AtStaljlen you meet with red ore, femi-tranfparent, cryftallized in fmall drufes $ mineral
