fortia’s travels in Sweden . 407
_ ,We promifed to fpeak of two very curious manufcripts : thefe the librarian had thedifcretion to prevent our feeing ; what we have to fay of them, tvas communicated tous by the Abbe Abertrandi, the librarian of the King of Poland , whofe knowledge ofbibliography can leave no doubt as to the exa&itude of the detail : they are both inLatin .
The firft of thefe manufcripts is of an extraordinary fize, fuch in flioft, that the vel-lum on which it is written can have been made of nothing but at's's fkin. It confifls- of forty quires, each of four fneets ; the two leaves being of a fmgle fheet make eightleaves, confequently fixteen pages, and altogether fix hundred and forty.
Nearly two leaves are wanting; the hiftory of the deluge is in the firft page. Theorder and number of the books it contains are as follows. The fingularity of the diftri-bution appeared to us fo extraordinary, as induces us to give the whole. The Penta-teuch.—Jolhua.—Judges.—Ruth.—Ifaiah.—Jeremiah.—Ezekiel.—Daniel, the two lajlchapters of which are. included. —The twelve Prophets.—The book of Job.—The fourbooks of Kings.—The book of Pfalms, a different verfion to that of the Vulgate.—Pro-verbs,—Ecclefialticus.—The two Parallipomena.—The book of Efdras, which includesthe two of the Vulgate. —-Tobit.—Judeth.—Either.—The two books of the Macca-bees..-r-Twenty books of the Hebrew Antiquities of Jofephus. This tranilation hasmany paffages which differ from that of Gelenius, and contains the celebrated paffagerefpe&ing Jefus Chrift.—The wars of the Jews by the fame Jofephus ; this tranilationexadtly correfponds with that attributed to Ruffin. To this fucceeds Sancli Ifidori cpif-t°la ad Branlionem .—His ethnologies libri XX. — Ifagogce Johannicii , Johannis Alexandrinidifcipuli tegni Galieni de phyfica. ratione .—4 Evangelia.—Adla Apojlolorum.—Epijlolce Ja-cobi.—Petri dua epijlolce. — D. Johannis tres epijlolce ; in the firft, thus runs the celebratedpaffage * : ct Et fpiritus ejl qui tejlificatur quia Chrijlus ejl veritas , quia tres funt qui tejli-inoniuni dant, Spiritus , acqua , et fanguis , ettres unum funt.”—Epjlolabeati Judece. — Apo-ca lypfis.-~Pauli epiftolce ad Romanos ,■ ad Corinthios, dues ad Galatos, ad Ephcefios, ad Phi-hppenfes, ad Thejfalonianfes dues, ad Colocenfes , ad Timothceum duce , ad Titum , ad Phile-m onem , ad Laodicences ; it is well known this laft is apocryphal.
At the end of this work is a confeffion in red letters on a brown ground; it fpeaks°f an infinity of abominable fins, without detailing the number or circumftances, otherthan the following: Peccavi in fornicatione diverfd cum anwialibus multis excepta cane.Afterwards follows a fuperftitious exorcifm. Cofmce Pragenfis chronica Bohemice libritres: — Monajleri't Bremnowienfs , et in Bramow Martinus abbus mifit hunc codicem Pra-gam verfus , 1594. This manufeript was doubtlefs taken by the Swedes at Prague , andconies from that convent. In the calendar Sanblus Benedidtus is written in large letters,'vnich gives reafon to conjefture that the convent in which it was found* was that of St.Senedift. St. Adalbert is marked in the calendar, but St. Staniflaus is not there. Theyffitation, the commemoration of the dead, and the feftival of Corpus Chrijli, are want-! pg- Eafter and Whitfuntide are inferted, it therefore muft bef pofterior to the eftab-lilhrnent of the moveable fealts in 1260 or 1264. It contains moreover the fignatures°f a number of princes and lords.
The fecond manufeript is entitled : “'Magiftri Johannis Arderum de Stewark, de artephyficali et de chirurgia, quus ego praediftus Johannis fervente (doubtful) peftiientia, ftuce fuit anno domini miilefimo CCCXL 1 X. ufque annum Domini M. CCCCXII. mo*
And it is the Spirit that bears witnefs that Chrift is the truth, for there are three which give tefti-mcn yi theTpirit ,water, and blood, and the three are one.
