Note. Two farms commonly between them provide one foldier, or form a rote according to the extent and excellentfarm. The crown cloaths the troops, and provides warlike (tores ; but upon review days, held for the fake of liquidation e „provincial regiments once a year, a certain fum is deducted out of his advances for his equipment, which is new everyyears. The farmer furnilhes the foldier with his working drefs, which occafions a great faving to the crown : thus & c3 n

in proportion to its population, is enabled to arm double the number of meq to what other powers can do, who, whileraife every twelfth man, (including the navy,) can arm no more than one in twenty-four; and this the more readily. ir . c ; a lfoldier being capable by his labour of earning fubfiftence for his wife and family. The iojlelles of the officers of the p r0 _, n .regiments (I mean the infantry,) amount annually to the fum of 232,765 filver dollars, according to the ellimation oft>> e . c j j0f feAs for the regiments of provincial cavalry, a rental of 60 dollars per annum is fet afide for the maintenance of each man, h ,s j 0and equipment; in fome provinces this rental is but 50 dollars. The dragoons are differently maintained, with fro ffl 15 flC .dollars allowance. The^nw d'armes receive 500 marks per man, if maintained by a number of peafants, and this (um gs icaftonally amount to 580 where fupported by one alone : this regiment not being raxfed as yet, the peafantry pay this 1

free-giftto the crown, and the weight of its preflure on individuals is dependant on circumilances.

Remarks. I. An extent of land which maintains a foot foldier or failor is called a Rote ; an eHate which maintains a h° r y.dier, a Rujl boll. The rentals above ftipulated are deducted by the crown from the annual taxes paid by the P £t2. The regiments of cavalry, rated above at one thoufand, were reduced to five hundred in 1792, the remaining five hundr < e ^ eI1 ;incorporated in the infantry. The regiment of guards confifts at prefent of no more than one thoufand two hundre ^ p[ a tethe King in 1792 creating a fecond regiment of one thoufand five hundred men. At his death a number of changes tooin military affairs, particularly a body of horfe artillery was formed, Sec. Sec. —''^pCC
