Helfinburg contains at moft but one thoufand two hundred inhabitants ; in any othercountry it would be confidered merely a village : it has neither fortifications nor port:its jetty of (tone, but bad ; on leaving it you afcend a deep mountain. The roads ex-cellent as far as Chriftianftadt. Before you arrive at this city you crofs the river Hel-gea over a number of bridges. Chriftianftadt is built pretty regularly of wood, is badlypaved, of inconfiderable fize, but fortified : fince the revolution of 1772 it has beenfamous. The King’s regiment is here in garrifon. Is- celebrated for its (kin gloves.Between Goeudderid and Norye you leave Scania to enter Blekingen. Between Noryeand Carljham is a fmall but very pretty cafcade. Carlfham is a fmall town badly paved;its ftreets are large and regular, its houfesof wood. In the very village itfelf of Runnebythere is a cafcade, and one, more confiderable, half a mile further.

Carlfcroon is a city which comprized fifteen thoufand inhabitants before the fire of1790: this deftroyed more than three-fourths of it. Great difpatchis ufed in its re-edifi-cation : a confiderable part is founded on the rock; the royal marine eftablilhmentbeing divided from the city by a very thick wall fuffered no injury. The travellerfhould fee the new dock, it is an admirable work ; but we may fafely affirm, from con-templation of the finances of Sweden , and the little value of the undertaking, that ifwill never be completed. The port, is well defended : the fortifications on the landfide are of no value; but the nature of the pofition, furrounded almoft on every fideby the fea, makes it difficult of approach.

You return from Carlfcroon by the fame road you came, as far as Runneby; halfa mile beyond which village you take the right hand road. There is another way byKillerid, but it is longer and not fo pleafant. Betweeen Skiceurgue and Diuramolayou leave Blekingen and enter Smaland, a wild and mountainous province; lakes, firs : the road excellent.

At Quarnamola you may bargain with the poftillions to take you acrofs the countryto Vexioeu. By this means you fave tw r o ftages, and a good length of time. If youprefer continuing with the fame horfes, the poflillion from Urfa will take you toVexioeu, without (lopping at Ingutijladt. Vexiceu is the capital of Smaland, and theonly city between Carlfcroon and Gottenburg: notwuthftanding the refidence of theGovernor and.Bilhop, it is but an infignificant place. It is fituated near a lake ; one
