The archives contain alfo thirteen volumes cf letters, journals, notes, and other ma*Hufcripts, of Peter the Great , written with his ov.n hand ; thefe papers fuffiiciently fhowthe indefatigable pains with which that great Monarch noted down the minuted circum-fhtnces, that might prove ufeful in his extenfive plans for the civilization and aggran-dizement of his country. Muller has lately given to the public feveral letters and otherpieces of this kind, which throw a confiderable light upon the tranfaclions of Peter’sreign, and afford ftriking inftances of his perfevering genius.

From the archives we repaired to the univerfity, alfo fituated in the Khitaigorod : itwas founded at the indance of Count Shuvalof, by the Emprefs Elizabeth, for fixhundred dudents, who are cloathed, boarded, and inllrufted at the expence of thecrown. We were received, with great civility, by the dire&or of the univerfity andprofeifors, who conduced us fird to their printing-office. One of the preffes being atwork, feveral flieets were druck off and prefented to us as fpecimens of the Ruffian ty-pography; on examining them, we found a complimentary addrefs to ourfelves in theEnglifh and Ruffian languages.

We next proceeded to the univerfity library, which contains a final I collection ofbooks, and a moderate apparatus of experimental philofophy. On taking leave of thedirector, he obligingly prefented me with a Grammar of the Tartar language, which istaught in this fociety, a Syllabus of a year’s lectures, and a catalogue of the Greek ma-nufcripts in the library of the Holy Synod. An extract from the Syllabus* will dis-play to the reader the general dudies, and the principal books ufed in this univerfity forthe indrudtion of the dudents.

Jan. 30, 172 1-2.

And in a difpatch to Sir Lnke Schaub, he thu3 exprcfles himfelf; La coutoume icy a toujours eted’ecrire aux Czars de Mofcovie fur du velin enlumine peint et dorc, comme on fait an* Empereurs de Ma-roc et Fez, et a plufieurs autres Princes non-Europeens lefquels felon cette coutume feroient egalernent fon-dez d’infiller lurletitre d’Empereur. On n’a jamais voulu changer 1 ’nfage etably, quoique les Mofcovitesl’ayent fort folicitc durant I’ambadade de my Lord Whitworth a Mofcow.

Thefe extradts are drawn from Sir Lube Schaub’s State Papers, in the rare and ample colledlion ofthe Earl of Hardwicke, a nobleman as diftinguilhed for the extent, as the liberal communication of Irisknowledge.
