council of polity, to watch over the interefts of the Company in conjunction with thegovernor.
They have a fecretary, who has alfo the rank of junior merchant.
Upon thefe follow the refidents of Bouro and Manipa, the calhier, the fecretary ofthe council of juftice, who is at the fame time firft clerk in the office of the fecretaryof the council of polity, the negotie, en foldy-overdraagers, or the writers of the com-mercial and military ledgers, who are all book-keepers in rank; and laftly, the comp-troller of equipment, who had before the rank of fea-lieutenant, but now that offea captain.
To this province further belong four lieutenants of the military, and eleven enfigns.
In order to afford a better means of fubfiftence to all thefe placemen, a yearlyrepartition is made among them, according to their refpeCtive ranks, out of the annualcrop of cloves ; and I fubjoin a ftatement of the repartition which was made in theyear 1755, agreeable to the regulation eftablifhed by the government at Batavia, onthe 31 ft of May of the fame year, which will at the fame time give an idea of thequantity of cloves annually collected.
