the whole of the other four. Tadore (Tidor), where we then was, has its own king.IVlutir and Machian are independent republics ; and when the Kings of Tarenate andTadore are at war with each other, thefe two democratic ftates furnifh foldiers to eitherparty. The lad of the iflands is Bachian, which has its didinQ; fovereign. The whole°f this didridt, in which cloves grow, is called Malucho (the Moluccas ).

. Upon our arrival at Tadore, we were told that eight months before a Portuguefedied there, of the name of Francis Serano. He was captain-general of the King ofTarenate, who was at war with the King of Tadore. Serano obliged the latter to givehis daughter in marriage to the former, and mod of the male children of the chiefpeople of Tadore as hoftages;—by thefe means peace was effected. From this mar-wage iffued the grandfon of the King Calanopagi, of whom we have before fpoken;hut the King of Tadore never fincerely forgave Francis Serano, and fwore to berevenged : in faff fome years after this occurrence, when Serano repaired one day to•1 adore to buy cloves, the King had poifon adminidered to him in leaves of betre,n ud he furvived but four days. The King wifhed to have him interred after the cudorrt°f his country ; but three Chriftian domeflics, which Serano had taken with him, re-dded his intention. Serano, at his death, left a boy and girl yet infants, the iffue of aMarriage contrafted by him in the ifland of Java. The whole of his property confided,a lmod exclufively, in two hundred bahars of cloves (68,8oolbs. avoirdupois weight).

Serano was an intimate friend of, and was even related to our unfortunate captain-general ; and him it was who influenced him in undertaking this voyage: for while■Magellan was at Malacca, he learnt from Serano that he was at Tadore, where a veryadvantageous traffic might be carried on. Magellan did not lofe fight of this informa-tion, w’hen Don Emanuel refufed the finall increafe of pay he folicited of a tedoon permonth * ; a recompenfe which he thought his fervices to the crown had amply de-served. In revenge, therefore, for the denial of a requed fo moderate, he repaired toSpain , and propofed toHis Majedy theEmperor a voyage to Malucho by a wedern courfe,' v hich propofition was lidened to, and originated the expedition on which we failed.

Ten days .after the death of Serano, the King of Tarenate, called Rajah Abuleisf, had married the daughter of the King of Bachian, declared war againd his fon-ln -law, and drove him out of his ifland. His daughter left then her exiled hufbandto mediate between her father and him, and while with her father for this purpofe Ihe^dminidered poifon to him, which took him off in the courfe of two days. At hisdeath he left nine fons: Chechili-Momuli j, Jadore-Vunghi, Chechilideroix, Ciliman-z °or, Cilipagi, Chialioochechilin, Catara-vajecu, Serich, and Calanogapi.

On Monday, 11 th November, Chechilideroix, one of the fons of the King of. ar enate whom we have before mentioned, approached our veffel with two pirogues,m which were men playing on gongs. He was dred in a robe of red velvet. We^ re afterwards informed that he had with him the widow and children of Serano.«tul h e not venture t0 C ome on board; and on our part we dared not to invite
