B O O K IV.

Return from the Malucho IJlands to Spain .

KEEPING on our courfe we palled between feveral iflands, the names of which arefollow: Caioan, Laigoma, Sico, Giogi, Cafi, Laboan *, Toliman, Titameti, Bachianf,°f which we have already fpoken, Latalata, Iabobi, Mata, and Batutiga. We wereto ld that in the ifland of Cafi, the inhabitants are fmall as pigmies : they are fubject tothe King of Tadore.

We fleered weftward of Batutiga, on a courfe weft-fouth-weft. Southward we fawieveral fmall iflands. Here the pilots from the Molucha Iflands recommended we fhouldanchor in fome port, that we might not be fubjedl to run alhore on the numerous iflets^fid fliallows. We confequently tacked to the fouth eaft, and made an ifland fituate inlatitude three degrees fouth, diftant fifty three leagues from Tadore.

This ifland is called Sulach J. The inhabitants are Pagans , and have no king : theyare anthropophagi, and, both men and women, wear no other clothing than a fmall piececloth, made of the bark of trees, two fingers broad, which conceals their fexualParts. There are in the neighbourhood other iflands, the inhabitants of which feed onhuman flelh. The names of fome of them are : Silan, Nofelao, Biga,, Atulabaon,Tertimor, Tenetum, Gonda, Kaiabruru, Manadan, and Benaia §.

We afterwards coafted along the iflands Lamatola and Tenetum.

After a run of ten leagues in the fame direction from Sulach, we came to an an-c horage on a large ifland called Buru, where we found provifions in abundance ; forSample, hogs, goats, fowls, fugar canes, cocoa-nuts, fago, a difh compofed of bananascalled canali, and chiacares, known here by the name of nanga. Chiacares J| are ar uit refembling water melons, but of which the rind is full of knobs. Internally it islull of fmall red feeds, fimilar to the feed of the. melon ; they have no lignous rind,a nd are of a medullary fubftance, fimilar to that of our white beans, but larger; theyare v ery tender, and in take referable chefnuts.

We likewife found here another fruit fimilar in its exterior to pine cones, but of a/eilow colour ; internally it is white, and when cut bears fome refemblance to a pear;

ls however much more tender than that fruit, and is of exquifite flavor : it is calledc °uulicai f.

^he inhabitants of this ifland have no fovereign : they are gentiles, and, like theP °ple of Sulach, go naked. The ifland of Buru lies in latitude three degrees thirty’Uutes fouth, feventy-five leagues from the Malucho iflands ## .
