thefe came on board, and each of them fixed upon a friend ; one of them chofe Mr.Banks, and the other Captain Cook . The ceremony confifted of taking off theirclothes in great part, and putting them upon their adopted friends. This complimentwas returned, by prefendng them fome trinkets. They then made figns for thefe gen-tlemen to go with them to the place of their abode ; and the captain being defirous ofmeeting with a more convenient harbour, and knowing more of the people, readilyaffented. Accordingly the captain, Mr. Banks , Dr. Solander, with the Indians andother friends, got into two boats. About three miles diftance they landed, amongfeveral hundreds of the natives, who conducted them to a large houfe. Upon theirentrance they law a middle-aged man, named Tootahah, who, as foon as they werefeated, ordered a cock and hen to be produced, which he prefented to Mr. Banks andthe captain, as well as a piece of perfumed cloth ; which compliment was returned by aprefent from Mr. Banks . They were then conducted with great civility to feverallarge houfes, confiructed in the fame manner as thofe already defcribed ; the ladies, fofar from fhunning, invited, and even prelfed them to be feated. Whillt they wereafterwards walking along the Ihore, they met, accompanied by a great number ofnatives, another chief, named Tubora Tumaida, with whom they fettled a treaty ofpeace, in the manner before defcribed. Tubora Tumaida intimated, he had provifionsfor them if they chofe to eat, and they accordingly dined heartily upon bread-fruit,plantains, and filh.

In the courfe of this vifit, Tomio, the wife of the chief, placed herfelf upon thefame mat with Mr. Banks , clofe by him ; but file not being young, nor appearing everto have polfelfed many charms, to thefe caufes may be afcribed the little attention thisgentleman paid her; and Tomio received the additional mortification of Mr. Banks sbeckoning to a pretty girl, who, with fome reluctance, came and feated herfelf by him-The Princefs was fomewhat mortified at the preference given to her rival, neverthelefsfhe continued her afliduities to him. This whimfical fcene was interrupted by an eventof a ferious nature. Dr. Solander having difcovered that he had loll an opera-glafs, hecomplained to the chief, and interrupted the convivial party. This complaint was en-forced by Mr. Banks ’s ftarting up and ftriking the butt-end of his mufquet on theground, which {truck the Indians with a panic, and they all precipitately ran outof the houfe, except the chief, and a few others of the filperior clafs.

The chief appeared much concerned at this accident, and gave us to underftand, with an appearance of great probity, that he would endeavour if poffible to have theglafs recovered ; but that if this could not be done, he would make the do&or co®-penfation, by giving him as much new cloth, of which he {hewed large quantities, nsIhould be thought equal to its value. The cafe however was in a little time brought*and the glafs itfelf foon after. After this adventure was amicably terminated, theyreturned to the {hip about fix o’clock in the evening.

Saturday the 15th, in the morning, feveral of the chiefs, one of whom was verycorpulent, came on board, bringing with them hogs, bread-fruit, and other refre®'ments; in exchange they gave them hatchets, linen, beads, and other trinkets ; but f0®eof them took the liberty of Healing the top of the lightning chain.
