resolution to quit a pleasant party, I leftAmsterdam in the afternoon, and passingthrough a prettier country than I had yetseen in Holland , we changed our convey-ance at a beautiful little village, calledLeonen, half way between Amsterdam andUtrecht , where we arrived late at night,having found the distance far greater thanwe expected. In this country their modeof reckoning distances is most barbarous,not by the mile or league, but by the hour,or as far as a man can walk in that time,a scale that seems to vary much in the dif-ferent provinces. At Utrecht we found avery comfortable hotel, the Antwerp Castle.There is an admirable collection of paint-ings here belonging to one of the professors,among which I was struck with an excel-lent Titian of our Saviour crowned withthorns. The tower is a stupendous build-ing detached from the church, and built in1328 . Its summit, 380 feet high, affordsan extensive view of Amsterdam , Rotter­ dam , the Pyramid at Zeist, and for manymiles in all directions over a flat but luxu-riant country. Beneath is a fine peal of
