We crossed the water by theferry, for the famous flying bridge was de-stroyed in the retreat of the French , andascended the terrace above the town calledthe Belvidere, where stands, amongst manyother remains of Roman architecture, anold tower in tolerable preservation, fromwhich is afforded an extensive view intoGermany , bounded on that side by hills,and on the other by the misty distance ofa Dutch landscape : the morning was fine,after torrents of rain which had fallen dur-ing the night: below us, on the left,flowed the rapid Waal, a branch of theRhine , and as far as the eye could reachwe traced its windings through a countryluxuriously verdant. Cleves was withinour view, and Grave about nine milesdistant, the cannonading at the siege ofwhich we could distinctly see and hear.Leaving this delicious spot we visited theStadt-house and Church, in neither ofwhich however was there any thing worthseeing, and crossing the Waal again, hireda carriage to take us to Bommel, a longc 2
