tedious by the obstinacy of my watermen,who, because there was a little breeze, wereafraid to hoist the sail lest there should bemore, I reached my destination, which is avery strong fortification surrounding a col-lection of miserable houses, with suitableinhabitants. With infinite trouble I founda place to sleep in. The only gratifyingspectacle, which I witnessed in this poverty-stricken little town, was that of all ourpoor fellows who were wounded at Bergen- op-Zoom , contented, and doing well underthe judicious care of Dr. Edwards, theEnglish surgeon there, whom they lookedupon as a kind and attentive father.

The next morning I was glad to escapefrom my vile hovel, and passing throughRosendaal, reached Antwerp , after experi-encing infinite trouble in clearing the dif-ferent out-posts; for the negotiations werethen pending, respecting the surrender ofthe town to the English , and the regulationsof the siege were not taken off. I wasstruck with wonder and admiration at the
