The interior of the church of NotreDame is by no means so striking as theexterior, and moreover is kept in so vile astate of uncleanliness, that it is absolutelydisgusting. This is too much the casewith most of the churches in France . Theinterior roof is supported by one hundredand twenty pillars, which are remarkableonly for their number, and not so either fortheir beauty or workmanship.

The gardens of the Thuilleries, thoughnot large, and all laid out in the formalstyle of continental gardening, are never-theless very beautiful. The western frontof the palace forms one end : the two sidesare enclosed by lofty terraces, and theother end opens upon the Place de la Concorde . The view from the centre gateof the palace extends through the ChampsEly sees , up a gentle slope, upon the topof which Napoleon was erecting a tri-umphal arch, about two miles distant.These gardens are adorned by numerous
