The wall of the tower is partly double,and once concealed a staircase, which isnow exposed, and leads to the second roomabove, on the window of which is rudelymarked in the stone, the names “ Ro-land and Hildegarde.” The whole buildingappears to have been formed with basalt,which constitutes the mass of almost allthe mountains hereabouts. By the assist-ance of the monks’ boat I again reached thegood sisters of LTle du Rhin, where theAbbess shewed me the tomb of Hildegarde,but refused to favour me with a sight ofthe living objects of my curiosity withinher walls.
