Dean of St. Paul’s for the time being, to be one,)to demolish and take down what is yet remaining°f the old fabrick, and to begin and carry on thenew work, or such part or portion of it, and insuch order and method, and by such ways andIile ans, and according to such rules and orders,as to you shall seem best; and to call to yourand assistance such skilful artists, officers,and workmen, as ye shall think fit, and to appointto each of them his several charge and employ-ment; to minister to such artists and officers,an d to all and every other person and persons tobe employed in the said service, (to whom youshall think meet,) such oath or oaths for the dueperformance of their several duties, employments,offices, charges, and trusts, to them, or any ofthem to be committed, as shall by you be thoughtreasonable and convenient; and out of suchmoney as shall be received for this work, toa] low to them, and every of them, such salaries,"’ages, and rewards respectively, as to you shallseem fitting, and proportionable to their employ-ment, and the service they shall do; and toconsider, advise, agree of, and set down par-ticular orders and instructions, as well for thesafe and well keeping both of the money fromPme to time brought into the treasury, and ofthe materials and provisions, to be from timeto time brought into the stores, as also for thefaithful and frugal issuing out, and disposing ofthe same for the publick use intended, andn ° other; and to direct and appoint by whom,an d in what manner, the books and accompts°f both shall be from time to time kept andc °niptrolled, audited, transcribed, and certified;an( l to put such a check upon the receipt andls suing out of both, as you shall judge necessary:
out of yourselves, and such other persons°f known ability and integrity as you shallc hoose from time to time, and as often as youShaU judge it expedient, to appoint, constitute,an d make such, and so many, sub-committees,as you shall think meet, for the better managingan d carrying on of this whole work; and toffivest them with such powers, pursuant to thea Uthorities hereby given, as shall be requisite;an ^ to revoke, annul, and determine the same;
to revive and make new the said sub-com-mittees, or any others, w'hen, and as often asy°u shall find it needful and conducing to the
service; and (in sum) to advise, treat, and con-sider of all other things, ways, and means, forthe better advancement and furtherance of thisgreat and excellent work, and to the finishingand perfecting the same, and to put the sameways and means in due and speedy execution;and finally to consult of and frame meet orders,ordinances, and constitutions, for the better pre-servation and maintenance of the said CathedralChurch in time to come, and for the preventingand suppressing of all present and future annoy-ances, purprestures, and encroachments, whichdo, shall, or may any way tend to the damage orhurt, blemishing or disgrace of the same; andthe said orders, ordinances, and constitutions,being reduced into writing, to present to us; tothe end that the same being by us perused andconsidered of, may receive our royal approbationand allowance, with such farther order from usfor the strengthening the same by our royalsignature, or under our great seal or otherwise,as we shall find meet, that so they may be put indue execution accordingly.
And although we are very sensible that theerecting such a new fabrick or structure, accord-ing to the design above mentioned, will be awork not only of great time, but also of veryextraordinary cost and expense, (far above thatof the repairs either former or later,) yet are wein no sort discouraged from undertaking thesame; being resolved, on our part, to contributethereunto all fitting aid and assistance; and noway doubting but that the piety and charity ofour good subjects will eminently appear by theirfrequent and liberal contributions to so honour-able and pious a design, v'hereby, at last, allkind of difficulties wall be overcome.
In order whereunto, as we were formerlygraciously pleased (beside our royal grant ofall arrears of impropriations, not pardoned bythe act of free and general pardon and indem-nity) farther to signify our good affection towardthe repair of the said Cathedral by the free giftof 1000/. by the year, to be paid quarterly outof our privy purse, and to be continued duringthe reparation of the said Church: so are wepleased much rather hereby to confirm andcontinue it, for the rebuilding and new erectingof the same.
And forasmuch as we are very confident that
