42 CHRONOLOGY.

Chapter of Theras ( 2 ), the brother-in-law of Ariftoderaus, and tutor toMWan.1.3. bis fons Euryfthenes and Procles, as Paufanias a relates : and byc ' 3 - p. -285. C onfequence, from the return of the Heraclidae, which was inthe days of Theras, to the battle, which was in the fifth year ofthis war, there were lix (_ 3 ) generations; which y as I conceive, being for the moft part by the eldeft fons, will fcarce exceedthirty years to a generation ; and fo may amount unto 170 or180 years. That war lafted 19 or 20 years: add the laft 15years; and there will be about 190 years to the end of that war:whereas the followers of Timaeus make it about 379 years; whichis above lixty years to a generation.

X. By thefe arguments, chronologers have lengthened thetime, between the return of the Heraclidae into Peloponnefus andthe firft Meffenian war ; adding to it about 190 years: and theyhave alfo lengthened the time between that war and the rife ofthe Perlian empire. For in the race of the Spartan kings, de-' Ferod. 1.7.fcended from Euryfthenes, after Polydorus, reigned b thefe kings;c . 204. Eurycrates, Anaxander, Eurycratides, Leon, Anaxandrides, Cleo-menes, Leonidas, Lee ( I ). And in the other race defcended fromc Herod. 1.8. p r ocles, after Theopompus reigned c thefe ; Anaxandrides, Ar-C ’ ' 3 ’ chidamus, Anaxilaus, Leutychides, Hippocratides, Arifton, De-maratus, Leutychides II. &c. ( 2 ) according to Herodotus. Thefekings reigned till the lixth year of Xerxes, in which Leonidaswas flain by the Perflans at Thermopylae; and Leutychides II.

( s ) The battle of Thermopylas was in the firft year of the 7;th olympiad, at the very begin-ning of the year. (Diod. Sic. lib. 11. c. 1. Herodot. lib. 7. c. 206.) The interval, therefore, from the beginning of the olympiads to this battle was 74 complete olympiads; that is, 296years. But from the return of the Heraclidae to this battle, our author reckons 342. Thedifference is 46 years; the interval by which the return of the Heraclidae, by this reckoning, preceded th*-'beginning of the olympiads. But the olympiads began Ann. Per. Jul. 3938.
