From the taking of Troy to the return of the He-raclidae, could fcarce be more than eiglity years; becaufe Orelfes,the fon of Agamemnon, was a youth at the taking of Troy,and his fons Penthilus and Tifamenus lived till the return of theHeraclidae ( 6 ).,

Thelearned Meurfius, who has taken much pains tobring together whatever is to be found in antient writers on this fubjeft (lee his Regnum Laconi-cum, c. 7 & 8.) fpeaks only of three att.empts ; the two of Hyllus, and that under the lons bfAriftomachus, which, proving fuccefsful, was of courfe the laft. Of the death ot Ariftoma-chus I find no mention, except in Apollodorus: who fays, that Ariftomachus died in the fecondattempt of Hyllus. Lib. 3. c. 8. § II. But fince it is intimated in the very next fenter.ee, that thefons-ofXleodaeus were not grown up at the time of this expedition ; fince Ariftomachus was afon, if not the only fon of Cleodieus; and fince the laft fuccefsful attempt is faid to have betn■made, when the perfons intended in this pailage, whoever they might be, were grown up ; forthefe reafons I fufpeft, that the names of Ariftomachus and Cleodxus have changed places in thetext of Apollodorus, and that Cleodams feli in the fecond expedition of his father Hyllus.
( 5 ) Our author here feems tofuppofe, that the return of the Heraclida: was 43 years earlierthan the beginning of the olympiads. This beingfuppofed, the taking of Troy, which was 80years earlier than that return, muft have been 123 years earlier than the beginning of theolympiads. Solomon’s death was igg years before the olympiads (§ X. note 4.) Therefore thetaking of Troy, by this reckoning. will have been 76,years later than the death cf Solomon.
