CHRONOLOG Y.
Sefac and Sefoftris were therefore kings of ali Egypt, at one andthe fame time : and they agree not only in the time, but alfo intheir adtions and conquefts. God gave Sefac. JTsntfn /rota» thekingdoms of the iands, 2 Chron. xii. Where Herodotus de-fer i bes the expedition of Sefoftris; Jofcphus a telis us that he de-fcribed the expedition of Sefac, and attributed his adtions to Se-foftris, erring only in the name of the king ( I4 ). Corruptionsof names are frequent in hiftory : Sefoftris was otherwife calledSefochris, Sefochis, Sefoofts, Sethofis, Sefonchis, Sefonchofis. Takeaway the Greek termination, and the names become Sefoft, Se-foch, Sefoos, Sethos, Sefonch: which names differ very little fromSefach. Sefonchis and Sefach differ no more than Memphis andMoph, two names of the fame city. Jofephus b telis us alfo, from Manetho, ■ that Sethofis wasthe brother of Armais, andthat tliefe brothers were otherwife called riEgyptus and Danaus ;and that.upon the return of Sethofis or Ahgyptus, from his greatconquefts into Egypt, Armais or Danaus fled from him into•• Greece.
XX. Egypt was at firft divided into many fmall kingdoms, like other nations; and grew into one monarchy by degrees :and the father of Solomows queen was the firft king of Egypt, who came into Phoenicia with an army : but he only toolc Gezir, and gave it to his daughter C). Sefac, the next king, came outof Egypt with an army of Libyans, Troglodites, and Ethiopians,2 Chron. xii. 3. and therefore was then king of ali thofe coun-tries ; and we do not read in Scripture, that any former king ofEgypt, who reigned over all thofe nations, came out of Egyptwith a great army to conquer other countries. The lacred hif-tory of the Ifraelites, from the days of Abraham to the days ofSolomon, admits of no fuch conqueror. Sefoftris reigned overall the fame nations of the Libyans, Troglodites and Ethiopians, and came out of Egypt with a great army to conquer other king-doms.
